Lao Highland Community Center

The Lao Highland Community Center in Seattle’s Rainier Valley was completed in 2005. The inspiration for the center grew out of InterIm CDA’s relationship with the Hmong, Mien and Kmhu communities whom we have worked with since 1989 when we began planning culturally appropriate housing for Southeast Asian refugees, an effort that led to the development of our Highland Gardens Apartments project in Issaquah. The center is a 1,400-square-foot facility with a large outdoor activity area that provides a gathering place where community members pass on traditional arts, dance, and language. An estimated 5,000 hill tribe people live in King County.
